Covenant With The Vampire by Jeanne Kalogridis

Hello again book friends!!!! Today I have a book that made my skin crawl but in the best way. I could not put this book down when I started it because it is so creepy and engaging that you just have to know what happens on every page. This is supposed to be a prequel to the events that happen in Bram Stoker’s Dracula but told in the same style as Dracula. We get to read the diaries of the decendants of the vampire Dracula to get an idea of what is going on. What I love about this book is how distinct each voice is in the diaries. Each switch of character is noted but you don’t need it because you know exactly who is talking.

The story is about the great nephew of Vlad (more like great grandson times 8) Arkady and his wife Mary who return to Transylvania at the news of his father dying. When they arrive they are greeted by Arkady’s sister Zsuzsanna and the sad news he has already passed. Arkady is to take up his father’s duties of helping Vlad which he learns will put his soul into danger. There’s the subplot with Zsuzsanna being horribly crippled and Vlad is turning her into a vampire to heal her.

This is book one of a trilogy which I am so anxious to find the rest and read them. This book has so much suspense and just the ick factor. You can tell this woman has done her research. Certain passages are exact mimics in description in Dracula which will keep it consistent. You can tell she truly took great care when writing this and I appreciate it.
